Herbicide treatment for invasive weeds

Invasive weeds spread quickly and can be hard to get rid of. Our invasive weed control service uses targeted herbicide spraying to treat Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, Himalayan balsam and ragwort on gardens in Chelmsford and surrounding villages, and on paddocks, farmland, commercial sites and land beside water across Essex, London and beyond.

It is part of our specialist weed control service, so we can treat other weeds on the same site too.

Fully insured: £10 million public liability insurance

Invasive weeds we treat

Japanese knotweed

A planned herbicide spraying programme, usually over more than one growing season, to stop knotweed spreading.

Giant hogweed

Herbicide treatment of giant hogweed on your land.

Himalayan balsam

Treatment on riverbanks, ponds and ditches by our PA6AW qualified operator, subject to any Environment Agency agreement needed.

Ragwort

Spraying ragwort in paddocks and grazing land, with advice on keeping animals off and removing dead plants.

Treating invasive weeds near water

Himalayan balsam and other invasive plants often grow along riverbanks, ponds and ditches. Our operator holds PA6AW, the certificate of competence for applying pesticides in or near water.

Using herbicides in or near water may also need the Environment Agency’s agreement. We will talk through what your site needs before any work starts.

What the rules say

GOV.UK says you must not plant invasive non-native plants in the wild or cause them to grow there. If you find them on your land, you must stop them spreading and causing a nuisance or damage to other land or property (GOV.UK: how to stop invasive non-native plants from spreading).

Ragwort is one of the injurious weeds covered by the Weeds Act 1959, and GOV.UK explains how complaints can be made where they risk spreading to other land (GOV.UK: injurious weeds).

Japanese knotweed and invasive weed FAQs

How do you treat Japanese knotweed?

With a planned herbicide spraying programme. Knotweed usually needs treatment over more than one growing season rather than a single visit, and GOV.UK notes that larger patches usually need respraying to kill them completely and prevent regrowth.

Can you treat Himalayan balsam near rivers, ponds and ditches?

Yes. Our operator holds PA6AW, the certificate for applying pesticides in or near water, so we can treat invasive weeds such as Himalayan balsam on riverbanks, ponds and ditches. Using herbicides in or near water may also need the Environment Agency’s agreement, which we will discuss with you before any work.

Do I have to deal with invasive plants on my land?

GOV.UK says you must not plant invasive non-native plants in the wild or cause them to grow there, and that if you find them on your land you must stop them spreading and causing a nuisance or damage to other land or property.

Can you control ragwort in paddocks?

Yes. We spray ragwort in paddocks and grazing land. Animals usually need to be kept off treated areas for a period set out on the product label, and dead ragwort should be removed, as it can become more palatable to animals after spraying.

Do you treat giant hogweed?

Yes. We treat giant hogweed with herbicide spraying, along with Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and ragwort.

What happens to cut or dead plant material?

GOV.UK says soil or plant material contaminated with invasive non-native plants may be classified as controlled waste. Taking it off site needs a registered waste carrier and an authorised disposal site.

Are you qualified and insured?

Yes. Spraying is carried out by an operator holding PA1, PA2, PA4, PA6 and PA6AW pesticide certificates, and we carry £10 million public liability insurance.
