Street and commercial tree pruning

For roadside, street and commercial trees we work from an aerial platform (cherry picker), so crowns can be reduced and lifted safely without climbing. Work areas are coned off and signed to keep pedestrians and traffic clear, and branches are chipped on site so the street is left clean.

Crown reduction & lifting

Reducing crowns and lifting low branches clear of roads, footpaths, buildings and street lights.

Aerial platform work

Pruning from a cherry picker basket for safe access to tall street and commercial trees.

Chipping & clear-up

Branches fed through a wood chipper on site and the area swept and left tidy.

Traffic management

Cones and signing to set out a safe work area beside the road. Get in touch to discuss your job.

Protected trees: check before work starts

Some trees are protected. A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) usually means you need the council’s consent before cutting or pruning, and most trees in a conservation area need six weeks’ notice to the council before work.

In Chelmsford, you can check with Chelmsford City Council; for other towns, check with the relevant local council. We are happy to talk this through when you ask for a quote. This is general guidance only, not legal advice.

Tree works FAQs

Do I need permission to cut down or prune a tree?

Possibly. Trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) usually need the council’s consent before work, and for most trees in a conservation area you need to give the council six weeks’ notice. In Chelmsford, check with Chelmsford City Council; elsewhere, check with your local council. This is general guidance only — always confirm before work starts.

Can you remove the tree stump?

Yes. Stumps can be removed as part of the job, including digging out the stump and main roots with our mini digger where access allows. Tell us if you want the stump removed when you ask for a quote.

What happens to the branches and logs?

Let us know what you would like — for example, logs left on site for you — and we will explain the options for removing the rest when we quote.

When is the best time for tree work?

Many trees can be pruned at most times of year, but timing can matter for some species and for wildlife. Nesting birds are protected by law, so work during the nesting season needs a check for active nests first.

Can you prune street trees or trees beside a road?

Yes. Roadside and street trees are pruned from an aerial platform, with the work area coned off and signed. Work on or next to the highway may need permission or a licence from the highway authority, and street trees are usually owned by the council, so tell us where the trees are and we will discuss what is needed.

Can you fell large trees or do climbing work?

Yes. Pruning, small-tree felling, cherry picker work and clear-up are carried out by our CS30/CS31 qualified team. Larger felling, climbing and sectional dismantling are carried out with qualified, insured specialist arborists we work with regularly, so you still have one point of contact for the whole job.

Do you cut hedges as well?

Yes. We cut, trim and reduce hedges, including large and overgrown hedges, as one-off jobs or as part of regular grounds maintenance.
